Masud Kamal, PhD

Dr. Masud Kamal is an environmental social scientist and Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. His academic and research expertise spans climate resilience, environmental governance, community engagement, climate adaptation, and just transitions, with a particular regional focus on Bangladesh and Australia. He holds a PhD in Human Geography, specialising in climate adaptation governance, from the University of Adelaide, Australia, and an M.S. in Development Studies from Lund University, Sweden.

Over the course of his academic and professional career, Dr. Kamal has led and contributed to numerous national and international research and consultancy projects involving policy analysis, field research, stakeholder engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration. His recent work includes serving as Lead Investigator for the ICIMOD-funded project on Migration and Conflict in the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region and as a Co-investigator for the Climate Risk Assessment for South Australia Outback, funded by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. He has also conducted research on community resilience, women’s leadership, environmental change, and climate resilience in the Sundarbans.

Dr. Kamal has published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals, including World Development, Ecosystems and People, World Development Perspectives, Climate and Development, and Local Environment. He is also co-editor of the book Social Transformation in Bangladesh, published by Routledge in 2024.
