Muhammad Tareq Chowdhury

Muhammad Tareq Chowdhury is an International Relations academic, researcher, writer, and policy analyst currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. He has been teaching at the university since 2019 and also serves as an Adjunct Faculty member in International Relations at the Bangladesh Military Academy under the Bangladesh University of Professionals. His teaching areas include international migration and refugees, gender in international relations, international development, South Asian affairs, foreign policy analysis, diplomacy, international organizations, and contemporary global issues. He earned both his Master of Social Sciences (MSS) and Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSS) in International Relations from the University of Chittagong. His Master's research examined the social reintegration experiences of Bangladeshi returnee female migrant domestic workers. His broader research interests include international migration, gender, women’s empowerment, refugees, human rights, forced displacement, and gender and development.

Chowdhury has extensive field-based research experience, particularly on the Rohingya refugee crisis and host communities in Cox’s Bazar. He previously worked as a Research Officer at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies on a UN World Food Programme-funded study of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals and local communities. His academic publications address female labour migration and reintegration, Rohingya displacement, human rights, public health, and development, with articles appearing in journals such as International Review of Sociology, VOLUNTAS, Current Sociology, and the International Journal of Human Rights in Healthcare.

He has received several competitive research grants from the University of Chittagong as a principal investigator and co-investigator for projects concerning female labour migration, climate change and gender-based violence, Rohingya refugees, public health and human rights, and juvenile delinquency. He is also a Co-Founder of the Center for Human Rights, Environment and Migration Research (CHREMIR) and the Chittagong University International Relations Society (CUIRS), and has contributed to community development and policy-oriented initiatives. His academic achievements include the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Essay Writing Competition 2015 and government scholarships awarded on the basis of academic excellence.
